The
concept of “region” is diffcult to define and is used in very various ways.
A region as a subdivision of a larger whole can be defined in both
geographical, cultural, political and administrative terms. The size of a
region may range from a rather small area up to entire continents (as in the
UNESCO’s understanding of the term).
In the past
decade the concept of “learning region” has known a growing success in
European policies. Although not very clearly defined either, this concept
usually focuses on promoting
dialogue,
cooperation, networking and learning between all social and economic actors
at local or “regional” level in order to promote innovation and development
in the respective area.
In the ERDI
seminar various examples of learning regions or regional learning will be
presented and discussed. No particular notion of “region” or “learning
region” is being prescribed, rather it will be interesting to compare
different approaches to this concept. Presenters are invited to explain in
particular
-
how the
concept is understood in their case,
-
what aims
and objectives are being pursued with learning regions,
-
what
measures are taken to promote learning regions,
-
what impact
could be achieved, and
-
what are
open questions and challenges for further development.
