The German Institute for Adult Education – Leibniz-Centre for Lifelong Learning organises in Bonn an international scientific event on the topic “International Comparative (Adult) Education Research – Multidisciplinary and Cross-National Research Approaches” from September 12th to 13th, 2016.

Scope of the Conference

In relation to the growing significance of international comparisons, international comparative research plays only a marginal role for adult and further education. Currently, neighbouring disciplines rather contribute analyses on comparative educational research. This holds most of all for educational sociology and economics of education, political science and welfare state research. Thus, there is a need for solid and reliable theoretical and methodological foundations of international comparative (adult) education research. Against this background, the international scientific conference addresses issues regarding the state and prospects of international comparative (adult) education research. The focus will be on theoretical and methodological approaches, based on international comparative research works. As international comparative educational research is a multi-, sometimes even inter-disciplinary field of research, the conference will harvest the potential of multi-disciplinary approaches. This way the basic scientific preconditions for theoretically grounded and methodically sound international comparative research are supposed to be improved also in the field of adult/further education

Basic information on the event

The event will be organised in the form of topical blocks of discussions in the context of which keynote presentations will be commented on by invited experts and be then discussed by the plenum. The topical blocks of discussions will serve for presenting the current state of research by way of exemplary research approaches and theoretical explanation models from international comparative studies and for taking stock on comparative methodological approaches, research questions and research fields from various disciplines. The international nature of the event will be guaranteed by inviting relevant, internationally renowned scientists from a variety of countries working in this field to give keynote presentations and comments. Moreover, in order of doing justice to the great number of disciplinary and methodological approaches of international comparative educational research, the invited speakers will represent various disciplines and research institutions.

The conference is a joint activity of the German Institute for Adult Education - Leibniz-Centre for Lifelong Learning (Prof. Dr. Josef Schrader, Dr. Alexandra Ioannidou), the Chair of Political Economics and Comparative Policy Analysis at the Institute of Political Science of Eberhard-Karls-University of Tuebingen (Prof. Dr. Josef Schmid) as well the Institute´s Graduate School of Education and Educational Policy in the Welfare State from an International Comparative Perspective. Prof. Dr. Josef Schrader and Dr. Alexandra Ioannidou (DIE) are in charge of planning and organising the event. Information on the registration will be available in due time.
